Challenge:
A burst pipe occurring over a weekend at a sales office caused water to
flow throughout
the 2,000-ft
facility, saturating the carpet. When the leak was discovered on a
Monday morning, a franchise restoration contractor was called in. The
contractor wet vacuumed the carpet and put dehumidifiers
and blowers in the offices. After several days, the contractor
pronounced the mitigation services as complete and that
there were no concerns with the computers or office equipment since they
were up off the floor. However, a few days later the Insured began
experiencing a rash of computer glitches and unexplained
failures. Asset Recovery Technologies (ART) was called in seven days
later when the failures skyrocketed.
Solution:
ART provided immediate on-site assistance through inspection of
electronic equipment. ART found that the pre-existing contaminants
(i.e., dust within the computers) were still damp, causing the hardware
failures, as well as intermittent electrical arcing and electrolytic
corrosion. ART dried and decontaminated the computers and office
electronics, resulting in the restoration of 50% of the equipment and
100% of data stored on hard drives. The remaining equipment was damaged
beyond repair as a result of the moisture/dust interaction combined
with re-powering of the units.
Value:
ART restored over $50,000 worth of computer hardware and all
critical business data. Unfortunately, due to the lack of
recognition of the moisture/dust interaction concern,
approximately $50,000 worth of hardware was damaged beyond
repair and the Insured experienced a two week business
interruption period. Since the franchise restoration contractor
stated that the computer hardware was unaffected by the event,
they not only lost payment on their restoration work but also
were forced to compensate the Insured for a portion of the
several $100K equipment and business interruption loss.
